DVD Ripping Programs

This holiday season I spent way too much money buying up discounted DVD movies. Now I have some remorse because I ended up giving most of them away as gifts for Christmas. I kept several for myself and now I want to take them with me on my next trip to Vegas for business but I do not feel like carrying all of the physical DVD discs. DVD Fab is one program that I have been using religiously as a DVD ripper to put all of my DVD movies into digital format so I can enjoy them on my laptop during my business flights. There are many other notable DVD ripping applications available that I can suggest to you from my experience.

So, what are the best DVD ripping programs out there?

DVD Fab

DVD Fab tops my list as a DVD ripping application but there are several others that I have used in the past that could be on your list of top DVD ripping programs.

DVD Fan rundown: DVD Fab is a commercial DVD ripper that costs $50. It has the ability to remove the DVD copy protections on many of the current DVDs available. It allows you to reduce the size of the ripped file by only compromising quality the least bit. It supports compressing DVD-9 discs to fit on DVD-5 discs or what you may refer to as a dual-layer DVD down to a single layer.

Handbrake

Handbrake is arguably one of the best DVD ripping programs according to several online reviews.

Handbrake rundown: Handbrake is available for Windows, Mac and Linux and can be purchased for $0. That’s right. Handbrake is a free application which makes it one of the better values. Handbrake allows you to not only rip DVD movies, but record content for conversion to other file formats such as MP4 and MKV. The only drawback to ripping some DVDs is Handbrake will not allow you to remove the protection built into many new DVD titles. Otherwise, converting a DVD to play on your PC, MAC, iPod, Linux based computer or other device is relatively easy.

DVD Shrink

DVD Shrink is a good alternative DVD ripping application if you do not have the money to spend on a licensed commercial version.

DVD Shrink rundown: DVD Shrink is another free DVD ripping application but only available for Windows. DVD Shrink does not limit your ability to rip protected DVDs. The interface or main menus for DVD Shrink can be a bit more complex than other DVD ripping applications. If you know exactly which files or media that you want to rip and convert from a DVD, DVD Shrink will be a no-brainer for you. If you are a novice user then you may want to consider a different application.

These are some of the more noteworthy and better DVD ripping applications that I have worked with. What DVD ripper do you use? Why do you choose it? Let us know by posting a comment below.
